'Mama' Haley/Hales Belcher | She/HerFrom drywall scraps at construction sites to my own little studio cave. At an early age I was consumed in mixed media and fought tooth and nail to use it on just about any surface. Through experimentation and critique I found home in the bright style most now recognize. Q. Where did ‘It’s Mama’s Art’ come from?
A. My nickname as a teenager onward was Mama Haley because of the way I would act around my friends. That could be a positive or derogatory mother hen descriptor depending on the day, mind you. I was never a big fan of my legal name so when my paintings started to get traction I just ran with the obvious of it’s – quite literally – Mama’s art.

Q. How old are you?
A. When this was written I was 31!

Q. Where did you attend art school?
A. I did not - I actually have a business degree (the crowd boos).

Q. Where do you paint?
A. From Macon to Atlanta and the woods in between.

Q. What’s your preferred paint?
A. Whichever acrylic paints are currently on sale (preferably) and Posca markers.

Q. What’s your favorite color?
A. Lime slime green.

Q. What happened to your other socials and sales?
A. At one point I became extremely overwhelmed by commissions, projects, and the need to market myself and my pieces socially. This turned into an extreme burn out that left me without anything creative for almost three years. When the spark found its way back to me, I decided to severely limit social media and paid projects to reframe from it happening again.

Q. If you’re not painting for income how are you able to do it?
A. Luckily my fulltime job covers my living expenses and my artistic expenses. Being an insurance manager isn’t cool – but it does pay the bills.

Q. Will commissions open up again?
A. Maybe yes, maybe no. I try to update my Instagram regarding drops or commissions as the feeling comes. If they do open up that will be the first place to know. Thank you for understanding.
